The 4 reasons why De Pindakaaswinkel does not use palm oil
We are huge fans of peanut butter , but not of palm oil! Palm oil is often used to make peanut butter smooth. Curious why we use coconut oil instead of palm oil? Read the 4 reasons below.
1. Disappearance of our rainforest
Every minute, about 50 football fields of rainforest disappear. That is terribly fast! Unfortunately, palm oil is a major consumer of this. Rainforest is used because this soil is rich in nutrients. Therefore, less (artificial) fertilizer needs to be applied to the land. This gives the farmers a cost advantage. It seems far away, but the air in the Netherlands is also purified by the rainforests. Coconut oil can grow on much poorer soils. However, the production of coconut oil per hectare is about half that of palm oil.
2. Soil depletion
After 15 to 20 years, the soil used for palm oil production is more or less at its end. What remains is an acidified soil where almost nothing can grow. The soil is left neglected, which is of course a great shame. Coconut oil can be extracted for about 60 years and the soil remains relatively constant.
3. Polluted wastewater
Palm oil factories produce a lot of waste water with high concentrations of pollution. Officially, this water may not be dumped in the river, but in practice it is different. This water causes a lot of damage, including in the oceans. The process of coconut oil is much less chemical and heavy.
4. Many chemicals
In the palm oil plantations, a lot of spraying is done against vermin. Our coconut oil is grown without chemicals.
In short, give us coconut oil! : )
