A look behind the scenes of our coconut oil
You may already know that we are for coconut oil ( check our article about it). This year we are going to look at the story behind our ingredients. How is it made? First we are going to look at where our coconut oil comes from. I am crazy about coconut myself, my favorite flavor is peanut butter coconut sea salt, so that worked out well! We buy our coconut oil organically from the company Health Ingredients Trading . They have a partnership with a company in Sri Lanka. I have been to that company in Sri Lanka. Imagine Sri Lanka as a tropical island with lots of palm trees.
How is coconut oil made?
- It starts with collecting the coconuts (they really come from everywhere, you can't go anywhere in Sri Lanka without seeing a coconut tree)
- The coconuts can only be processed when they are ripe. They are green at first and then turn brown, as you know them in the supermarket. The ripening process takes a total of three weeks.
- Now the real work begins: removing the skin. Dozens of people with a small axe are busy chopping for this all day long. This is quite annoying to see: a lot of people doing the same monotonous work all day long.
- After this it becomes a lot more automated and the coconut is dried and ground.
- Coconut oil is pressed from the coconut pieces. The only thing left is coconut flour.
The nice thing about the coconut is that everything is used. The water is sold as coconut water, whether or not in cans, the pulp is used to make flour or chips and coconut milk is made from the flesh. Then of course there is the coconut oil itself. The shell is used as fuel and I have seen many bowls made from the coconut. In short, a beautiful product!
