Is peanut butter healthy?
We don't have to tell you that we are fans of peanut butter! But in this blog we will take an open look at whether peanut butter is healthy. We already know a lot about it, but we have delved deep into the books for this. Is peanut butter healthy or not? Here are the pros and cons of peanut butter.
Advantages
Peanut butter contains a list of healthy ingredients. It is therefore a favorite among many athletes and dieticians due to the perfect ratio of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Peanut butter contains no less than 28% protein, and many unsaturated fats (total fat 50%, of which 80% unsaturated). Furthermore, it is a rich source of dietary fiber, vitamin E, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and copper. Quite a list! Peanut butter without added sugars and salt falls within the Wheel of Five of the Nutrition Center. According to the Nutrition Center, eating peanuts lowers LDL cholesterol and reduces the risk of heart disease. A small handful of nuts per day can have a positive effect on your health. “Peanuts are just as healthy as nuts,” says professor Piet van den Brandt. Other research shows that people who eat a lot of peanut butter have a lower risk of developing certain diseases. The risk of colon cancer decreases by 27% if you eat a lot of peanuts, and the risk of type 2 diabetes decreases by 21%.
Disadvantages
Peanut butter contains omega-6. Omega-6 fatty acids are generally well represented in our diet. A diet with too many omega-6 fatty acids is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, this is contrary to the statement of the Nutrition Centre, which indicates a reduction. Peanut butter contains Lectins. Lectins are a group of complex proteins that bind to carbohydrates and can attach to the mucus of the intestinal wall. This can disrupt the functioning of the intestines. Professor Piet van den Brandt indicates that the health effects of peanut butter are not the same as those of peanuts. The explanation for this is that peanut butter from the supermarket consists of only 80% to 85% peanuts. Salt and palm oil are often added to this, which negate the good health effects of peanuts.
